The Aggies posted their best ever record of 35 wins and 5 losses during the 1982-1983 season with a fully loaded team of transfers: Tommy Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.), Jim Avery (Whitharral, Texas), Chris Branham (Tucson, Ariz.), Tim Carey (Garden City, Kan.), Sidney Diggs (Waynesboro, Va.), Mack Harris (Toledo, Ohio), Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky.), Chuck Hood (Davenport, Iowa), Scott Hunter (East Moline, Ill.), Larry Lopez (New Castle, Calif.), Mark Makeever (Galesbury, Ill.), Sterling O'Neal (Rockville, Mo.), Tony Vaughn (Sacramento, Calif.), Keith Williams (Stayton, Ore.), and 2012 Aggie Hall of Fame inductee Bernard Hill (Spring Valley, N.Y.)
 
Coached by Terry Layton and assistant Ed Weidenbach, the Aggies earned the honor of hosting the first round of the NAIA District IX Playoffs. The team came out as District Champions and Coach Layton was honored as NAIA District IX Coach of the Year with Bernard Hill being named First Team All-District. Chuck Hood described the head coach as an innovator and said that in his own experience as a coach, referee, and current job with the NBA he has never experienced a greater group of players and coaches.
 
Hood recalls the thrill of winning the championship in front of their home crowd and adds that "You couldn't get a seat in Oscar Williams Field House that year; the gym was packed for every game."
