Goodwell, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University Head Women's Soccer Coach
Mike Rosso has unveiled what is the first-ever roster in program history. The Aggies begin their inaugural season, officially, on Sunday, August 18 with a contest at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo., playing their first home contest the following Saturday (Aug. 24/6 p.m.) versus Texas College.
In all, Rosso will employ a total of 21 players as a part of the historic roster for 2019. As might be expected for any start-up program, Rosso will have a very young squad - with only four upper classmen (and just two of those with collegiate soccer experience) – along with 17 true freshmen.
The most experienced player among Rosso's charges is exactly where you would want it: at goalkeeper.
Brittany-Lee Smith (Mineral Wells, Texas/Mineral Wells H.S.) is a senior transfer by way of Pratt Community College for two seasons and one year at NCAA III University of the Ozarks. Smith did not allow a goal in a reserve capacity at Ozarks last year.
Marybel Garcia, a junior transfer, spent the past two seasons at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa. A defender, Garcia started both seasons and earned her team's Defensive Player of the Year award as a sophomore.
Two other players – sophomore
Chantel Guel (Stratford, Texas/Stratford H.S.) and junior
Keiry Fernandez (Guymon, Okla./Guymon H.S.) – were both already attending Panhandle State. Fernandez ran cross country for the Aggies in 2018. The duo are just two of several regional high school products to join the Panhandle team for Year One.
In addition to Guel and Fernandez, incoming freshman players from OPSU "neighborhood" includes:
Cat Tum-Garcia (Guymon, Oklahoma./Guymon H.S.);
Jace Ramos (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa H.S.);
Rosio DeLaGarza (Guymon, Okla./Guymon H.S.), and;
Brisa Chavez (Gruver, Texas/Gruver H.S.).
Freshmen from the Metroplex area, OPSU will have
Sam Lopez (Ft. Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) and
Adri Mendoza (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto H.S.).
Miranda Cardona (Odessa, Texas/Odessa H.S.),
Bre Taylor (San Angelo, Texas/Central H.S.) and
Beth Hernandez (Lubbock, Texas (Frenship H.S.) come to the Aggies from the west-central Texas area, while
Julieta Garcia (Burges H.S.) and
Zolen Iglesias (Burges H.S.) join the team from out in the west Texas town of El Paso.
From the southern portion of Texas, Rosso was able to sign
Erika Garcia (Temple, Texas/Temple H.S.),
Dani Hernandez (San Marcos, Texas/San Marcos H.S.),
Angel Rodriguez (San Marcos, Texas/San Marcos H.S.),
Legacy Kugelman (Temple, Texas/Belton H.S.),
Clara Ortiz (Bridgeport, Texas/Bridgeport H.S.) and
China Banda (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial H.S.).
